SMS Character Limit

A standard SMS message can contain up to 160 characters, or 70 characters if it includes one or more Unicodecharacters (such as emojis).

Modern phones and mobile networks support message concatenation, which allows for the sending of longer messages. Messages exceeding 160 characters are automatically divided into segments and reassembled upon delivery.

While this feature enables the transmission of lengthy SMS messages, it does lead to higher costs, as SMS charges are applied per segment. The 160-character limit applies to messages encoded with the GSM-7 character set. If a message uses a different encoding, it is limited to 70 characters.

Telogix's platform supports long messages of up to 1,600 characters across all Programmable Messaging channels, including SMS. However, for SMS messaging, We recommend keeping messages to no more than 320 characters to ensure optimal deliverability and an improved user experience.
